In order to keep up with the ever increasing demand for energy in the San Diego region, San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) constructed the Sunrise Powerlink Transmission Project. The Sunrise Powerlink is a 117 mile, 500-kilovolt transmission line designed to carry renewable energy from the Imperial Valley to San Diego. The line has the capacity to carry up to 1,000 megawatts of clean power — enough energy for approximately 650,000 homes.
The project spans a large and diverse area and much consideration was taken to assure successful construction of the Sunrise Powerlink while minimizing visual and environmental impact of the area. Agencies such as U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Bureau of Land Management and California Public Utilities Commission worked in partnership with SDG&E to ensure protection of the environment and beauty of the landscape was maintained.
For a section of the Cleveland National Forest, it was requested that the lattice towers be colored or stained to better blend with the surrounding landscape. SDG&E looked into a variety of options to achieve the desired results. Out of the options Natina was specified.Natina was chosen because it is non-toxic and environmentally safe, includes natural micronutrients and oxidizers and has a unique mottled finish for a camouflage-like effectNatina was applied to the lattice towers via helicopter and the color development occurred over the next weeks.
Our professional team expertly applies Natina on galvanized steel surfaces that will not fade, crack or peel due to the sun. Natina requires little to no maintenance and lasts longer than the other alternatives like power coating, paints or weathering steel (A588). Our weathered steel look is more like what you’d see in nature itself with varied rich, brown color. Natina Steel Solution is price competitive and typically more affordable. All our solutions are natural, environmentally safe and non-toxic. Call us for information on how we can help your commercial project.
