Why Some Rocks Turn Black, Red or Brown Over Time — and Why It Matters

You’ve probably seen it before: deep black coatings, rusty-red streaks or even warm brown hues clinging to canyon walls and cliffs. That’s called desert varnish. It’s called rock varnish, too. And this varnish takes its time — millennia, in fact — to develop its signature dark, streaky patina. But what exactly is it, why is it there and why should you care?

A Patina with Patience

Desert varnish is a mysterious, slow-growing surface coating that turns otherwise plain rocks into geological showpieces.

While often linked to dry, desert environments (hence the name desert varnish), rock varnish can actually form in a variety of climates — from arid deserts to temperate regions.

It forms where rocks are exposed to wind, dust and bacteria that help bind manganese and iron oxides to the rock surface. Over thousands of years, these elements build up to create dark coatings, ranging from tan and reddish-brown to jet black.¹

Scientists have identified at least 14 different types of rock coatings, meaning your favorite canyon wall is “rocking” an intricate, multi-layered patina.¹

How the Desert Paints Its Rocks

When rock varnish forms, the process goes something like this:

1. Dust and minerals settle on a rock surface thanks to wind and water.
2. Bacteria step in to help bind iron and manganese oxides to the rock.
3. Time, weathering and more time allow the coating to slowly darken and harden, forming that distinctive varnish look. Over the course of 1,000 years, desert varnish builds up at an incredibly slow pace: just 1 to 40 micrometers, which is thinner than a single strand of human hair!²

The varnish’s color depends on its composition:

• Black varnish = more manganese oxide²
• Red or orange varnish = more iron oxide²
• Tan or brown varnish = a mix of both manganese and iron²

So, depending on the local minerals, some rocks end up looking as dark as midnight, while others resemble a high-end, rust-colored leather couch.

Find It in the Canyons and Maybe the Cosmos

Not all rocks get the varnish treatment. It tends to show up on hard, erosion-resistant surfaces, particularly sandstone.

You’ll spot it in places like the Colorado Plateau, the Sahara Desert’s Messak Settafet and just about any scorched canyon wall where water has left streaky trails.^2,3

Scientists have even found potential rock varnish-like coatings on Mars, meaning your favorite desert boulder might have something in common with an alien landscape.²

Many petroglyphs — that is, rock carvings made by indigenous cultures — were created by chiseling away the varnish to reveal the lighter rock beneath. This means desert varnish isn’t just an environmental oddity; it’s also a historical record, preserving the art and messages of people who lived thousands of years ago.

A rockin’ example: New Mexico’s Petroglyph National Monument is home to an astonishing 25,000 rock carvings, created by Puebloan people and early Spanish settlers.¹

Meanwhile, deep in the Libyan Desert, the Wadi Mathendous archaeological site preserves ancient engravings of wildlife that once roamed the region — including rhinoceroses, crocodiles, giraffes and elephants. Estimated to be around 8,000 years old, these intricate petroglyphs offer a glimpse into a time when the Sahara was a wetter ecosystem.³

But rock varnish doesn’t just hold human history. Scientists believe it can capture clues about ancient climates, too. Some researchers suggest that the layering in varnish could reflect past climate conditions, like tree rings but for rocks.⁴ How cool is that? Did you know weathering steel can corrode in certain environments? But wait — “it’s supposed to have natural corrosion resistance!” True … but only sometimes. While weathering steel has a protective patina, if it’s in the wrong conditions, it can corrode faster than you’d expect, leading to costly repairs, structural issues, and maintenance headaches. Before you commit to using it, here’s what you need to know.  

Weathering Steel 101

Weathering steel, AKA Cor-ten steel, is a low-alloy steel designed to form a protective rust-like patina (we love a good patina finish!) when exposed to the elements.

What’s the catch about weathering steel?

Weathering steel may seem like the way to go. But (and it’s a big “but”) there are four cons you should consider before choosing it for your project. 

1. Environment vulnerability

You’d think weathering steel would thrive in any weather, but that’s not the case. The ideal environment for weathering steel features wet and dry cycles, which help the patina develop and stabilize. Too much humidity? Nope. Poolside? See ya! Salty air? Hard pass. These conditions can challenge its corrosion resistance; here’s why: 

• High-chlorine environments can compromise the protective patina, accelerating the corrosion process and leading to failing steel structures well before the end of their intended lifespans.   

• Coastal or high-humidity regions with salty breezes and areas prone to frequent water retention are particularly problematic and can lead to unchecked corrosion.1
• Lush vegetation where plants trap moisture against the steel. American Electric Power (AEP) found this combo led to severe ground-line corrosion and thinning steel walls.2
• High-precipitation or snow-heavy areas means the steel rarely dries out—no dry cycle, no stable patina.2
• Poor detailing or outdated specs, where moisture sneaks into joints or flat-edged coatings trap water, often end in pack-out corrosion.2

Bottom line: If the environment doesn’t offer regular chances for the steel to dry out, the patina won’t form properly—and without it, corrosion can take over.

2. Potential staining

While the rusting patina may look aesthetically appealing, it has a downside: “bleeding.” During the patina’s formation, rust particles can wash onto nearby surfaces, leaving stains that might discolor adjacent areas. This can be a dealbreaker for projects where appearances matter (and they almost always do).1

3. Limited availability

Weathering steel isn’t always as accessible as traditional steel. It isn’t exactly hanging out at every corner hardware store. So, depending on your location, you might face longer lead times or higher material costs, which could delay your project or stretch your budget.1 

4. Design limitations

Smart design plays a critical role in the longevity of weathering steel structures. By addressing design challenges up front, you can significantly extend the lifespan of weathering steel and reduce corrosion risks. Here are some key things to consider: 

• Avoid crevices, cavities, or features that trap moisture. 

• Ensure areas, where corrosion products (known as pack-out) might accumulate, are minimized. 

• Incorporate adequate drainage to keep water from lingering on surfaces.1 

Weathering steel can be chosen at times; however, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. Understanding the limitations and planning for environmental and design factors will ensure it performs as desired. 

What’s an alternative to weathering steel when you need an alternative?

Hot-dip galvanized steel — which can be coated with Natina’s rustic color — is perfect for any area, including those “aggressive” environments. It has none of the cons listed above for weathering steel and even more pros.

1. Strong against the elements

Weathering steel corrodes over time, meaning you may need extra-thick sections to make up for the mass loss (cha-ching). Hot-dip galvanized steel? No mass loss, no extra steel, no extra cost.3

2. Easy to inspect and maintain

Unfortunately, that rust that’s so beloved on weathering steel makes it really hard to tell if the structure is failing. So, inspections are expensive and extensive. Hot-dip galvanized steel, on the other hand, resists corrosion inside and out. With Natina’s patina on top, you get a natural look that doesn’t require continual application of color.3

3. Patina perfection with natina

OK, we don’t want to brag, but our patina on hot-dip galvanized steel is ready onsite, compared to weathering steel. That weathering steel look takes 3-5 years to fully develop!3 Ours? Annalise Mannix, the division chief for planning at Miami-Dade County water and sewer, stresses that her department’s goal is not just to meet building codes but to exceed them. “We know the sea wall ordinance says you have to build the wall to 5 ft,” Mannix explains, “But that doesn’t mean ‘only’ 5 ft.” This mindset highlights a growing push among engineers and municipalities to build beyond minimum requirements, considering rising sea levels, increasing flood risks, and other evolving factors.⁸

Hot-dipped galvanized steel not only shares the strength attributes of weathering steel but also boasts several additional advantages (like being able to be treated with Natina’s patina solution).⁴

In a “wild” collaboration with a zoo, Natina took on an exciting project to revamp a bear habitat. The goal was to transform the glaring metal enclosure into a “bearly” noticeable one, while also ensuring the safety and well-being of the tropical bears that call it home.  

Making a Hard Job Easy 

The zoo faced the difficult challenge of finding a coloring solution that would improve the aesthetics of the habitat. The solution had to meet various requirements, including being USDA-compliant, natural, nontoxic, rust-free and low maintenance.  

Essentially, the challenge was twofold — it had to avoid any adverse effects on the tropical bears and plants within the habitat, while simultaneously reducing the visual impact for human observers.  

That’s where Natina came in. We collaborated with the zoologists, designers and experts to not only meet their criteria but also to surpass their expectations.

Urban Planning: A Bridge between Form and Function

Urban planning, often called city planning, shapes the development of cities and towns through strategies that enhance the growth and well-being of urban landscapes.

Key players in this industry are planners and architects. Urban planners guide the destiny of spaces, deciding how they’ll be used and considering the impact of development. Historically, urban planning emerged as a response to the crowded and unhygienic conditions of the late 19^th century. Animal populations have declined by nearly 70 percent on average in the last 50 years, so cities are stepping into the forefront of the rewilding movement, embracing ecological sustainability into urban architecture and planning.⁶

This ecological strategy, championed by researchers since the late 1990s, is finding its place in the urban landscape. Rewilding introduces a paradigm shift in urban architecture and planning, where accommodating urban biodiversity becomes a cornerstone of design.⁶

Bioarchitecture, for instance, integrates wildlife-friendly features into urban designs, catering to creatures such as bats, opossums, and birds. Meanwhile, biophilic planning emerges as a movement that not only supports biodiversity but also enhances ecological connectivity for both humans and animals. This twofold approach doesn’t just increase biodiversity; it also addresses issues such as urban heat and climate resilience.⁶

One of the critical aspects of rewilding is the revival of large mammal populations. Yet, this undertaking faces complex challenges, as the decline of these creatures is often met with misconceptions of danger and destruction. Urban areas are now embracing a responsibility to infuse wildlife-friendly planning, while suburban zones recognize their role in fostering coexistence with larger mammals.⁶

The synergy between planners, architects, biologists, and wildlife experts is paramount in this new era of rewilding.
