You’ve probably seen it before: deep black coatings, rusty-red streaks or even warm brown hues clinging to canyon walls and cliffs. That’s called desert varnish. It’s called rock varnish, too. And this varnish takes its time — millennia, in fact — to develop its signature dark, streaky patina. But what exactly is it, why is it there and why should you care?

A Patina with Patience

Desert varnish is a mysterious, slow-growing surface coating that turns otherwise plain rocks into geological showpieces.

While often linked to dry, desert environments (hence the name desert varnish), rock varnish can actually form in a variety of climates — from arid deserts to temperate regions.

It forms where rocks are exposed to wind, dust and bacteria that help bind manganese and iron oxides to the rock surface. Over thousands of years, these elements build up to create dark coatings, ranging from tan and reddish-brown to jet black.1

Scientists have identified at least 14 different types of rock coatings, meaning your favorite canyon wall is “rocking” an intricate, multi-layered patina.1

Desert Varnish on Cliff in Escalante, Utah | Photo by Donald Giannatti

How the Desert Paints Its Rocks

When rock varnish forms, the process goes something like this:

Dust and minerals settle on a rock surface thanks to wind and water.

Bacteria step in to help bind iron and manganese oxides to the rock.

Time, weathering and more time allow the coating to slowly darken and harden, forming that distinctive varnish look. Over the course of 1,000 years, desert varnish builds up at an incredibly slow pace: just 1 to 40 micrometers, which is thinner than a single strand of human hair!2

The varnish’s color depends on its composition:

Black varnish = more manganese oxide2

Red or orange varnish = more iron oxide2

Tan or brown varnish = a mix of both manganese and iron2

So, depending on the local minerals, some rocks end up looking as dark as midnight, while others resemble a high-end, rust-colored leather couch.

Find It in the Canyons and Maybe the Cosmos

Not all rocks get the varnish treatment. It tends to show up on hard, erosion-resistant surfaces, particularly sandstone.

You’ll spot it in places like the Colorado Plateau, the Sahara Desert’s Messak Settafet and just about any scorched canyon wall where water has left streaky trails.2,3

Scientists have even found potential rock varnish-like coatings on Mars, meaning your favorite desert boulder might have something in common with an alien landscape.2

Before Paper, There Was Patina

Long before geologists figured out desert varnish, early humans took one look at these dark rock coatings and thought, “Canvas!”

Many petroglyphs — that is, rock carvings made by indigenous cultures — were created by chiseling away the varnish to reveal the lighter rock beneath. This means desert varnish isn’t just an environmental oddity; it’s also a historical record, preserving the art and messages of people who lived thousands of years ago.

A rockin’ example: New Mexico’s Petroglyph National Monument is home to an astonishing 25,000 rock carvings, created by Puebloan people and early Spanish settlers.1

Meanwhile, deep in the Libyan Desert, the Wadi Mathendous archaeological site preserves ancient engravings of wildlife that once roamed the region — including rhinoceroses, crocodiles, giraffes and elephants. Estimated to be around 8,000 years old, these intricate petroglyphs offer a glimpse into a time when the Sahara was a wetter ecosystem.3

But rock varnish doesn’t just hold human history. Scientists believe it can capture clues about ancient climates, too. Some researchers suggest that the layering in varnish could reflect past climate conditions, like tree rings but for rocks.4 How cool is that? If that turns out to be true, desert varnish might be one of the slowest but most reliable storytellers of Earth’s past.

Petroglyphs Carved on Rock Face, Covered in Desert Varnish | Photo by Lyle Wilkinson

What Rock Varnish Can Teach Us

Besides looking cool and holding ancient secrets, it also shows how life (even microscopic life) can thrive in the harshest environments, transforming landscapes in ways we’re only beginning to understand.

So, next time you’re hiking through the desert and see those dark streaks on a canyon wall, take a moment to appreciate them. Those rocks are natural masterpieces, having been patiently collecting their patina for thousands of years. To sum it up, desert varnish is basically three things: science, history and completely awesome.

Why Wait 10,000 Years?

Natina is your path to a faster patina finish! Our patina coating forms within 4-8 weeks, instead of millennia, and it works great on rocks. It has all the beauty of a natural patina, without the need for extended amounts of time and weather exposure for it to develop.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is desert varnish?

Desert varnish is a naturally occurring dark coating that forms on exposed rock surfaces over thousands of years. It develops from a combination of clay minerals, manganese, iron and environmental exposure in arid climates.

How long does desert varnish take to form?

Desert varnish forms extremely slowly, often taking thousands of years to develop. In many environments, the coating grows only a few micrometers per thousand years.

What causes desert varnish to form?

Desert varnish forms through a combination of dust, moisture, bacteria and mineral deposits interacting with exposed rock surfaces over long periods of time. Manganese and iron oxides gradually build up to create the dark patina appearance.

Is desert varnish only found in deserts?

No. While desert varnish is most commonly associated with arid desert environments, similar rock coatings can also form in semi-arid, coastal and even some temperate regions. Scientists often use the broader term “rock varnish” because these naturally occurring mineral patinas are not limited strictly to deserts.

Why are some desert rocks black?

Some rocks appear black because of high concentrations of manganese oxide within the varnish layer. This mineral-rich coating creates the dark charcoal or black appearance commonly seen on canyon walls and desert cliffs.

Why is desert varnish important?

Desert varnish helps scientists study geology, climate history and environmental conditions over time. It also holds cultural significance, as many ancient petroglyphs were created by carving through the dark varnish surface to expose lighter rock beneath.

Can you recreate the look of desert varnish on rocks or structures?

Yes. Specialized reactive color treatments can help create a natural, weathered appearance on rock, steel and concrete surfaces much faster than natural desert varnish formation occurs in nature.

What types of projects use natural-looking rock or steel finishes?

Natural-looking finishes are commonly used on highway infrastructure, retaining walls, guardrail systems, wildlife crossings, utility structures, parks, bridges and landscape architecture projects where blending into the surrounding environment is important.

How does Natina help achieve a desert varnish appearance?

Natina’s Reactive Color Treatment is designed to create earthy, natural-looking finishes that visually integrate rock, steel and concrete into surrounding landscapes. The treatment develops a weathered patina appearance in weeks instead of thousands of years.

What’s the catch about weathering steel?

Weathering steel may seem like the way to go. But (and it’s a big “but”) there are four cons you should consider before choosing it for your project.

1. Environment vulnerability

You’d think weathering steel would thrive in any weather, but that’s not the case. The ideal environment for weathering steel features wet and dry cycles, which help the patina develop and stabilize. Too much humidity? Nope. Poolside? See ya! Salty air? Hard pass. These conditions can challenge its corrosion resistance; here’s why:

2. Potential staining

While the rusting patina may look aesthetically appealing, it has a downside: “bleeding.” During the patina’s formation, rust particles can wash onto nearby surfaces, leaving stains that might discolor adjacent areas. This can be a dealbreaker for projects where appearances matter (and they almost always do).1

Geotechnical engineering is where earth science meets adventure! This specialized field is all about understanding the earth beneath our feet and how it interacts with the structures we build — projects ranging from bridges and tunnels to buildings and roadways. One critical area within this field is the management of natural hazards, such as landslides and rockfalls. This is where rockfall mesh (something we at Natina specialize in coloring!) comes into play, protecting both people and property from the dangers posed by falling rocks.

Understanding Geotechnical Engineering and its Aesthetics

So, who’s responsible for this type of infrastructure? A geotechnical engineer! And there’s a specific type of person that thrives in this career. They’re the ultimate problem-solvers with a knack for curiosity! They’re investigative, analytical, and logical thinkers, always asking “why?” and “how?” They’re also super friendly and team-oriented. In other words, they’re brainy and approachable — the perfect combo!1

Now, what do they actually do? These Earth detectives dive deep into the behavior of soil, rock, and other materials lurking beneath the ground. They apply scientific principles and engineering techniques to figure out how these materials behave to ensure structures like roads, buildings, and bridges are safe and sound.2

Soil Mechanics:

Site Investigation:

Scoping out potential problems before they happen.

It’s obvious these engineers “rock” at their jobs, and they are essential to safe foundations, slopes, embankments, retaining structures, roadways, tunnels, levees, wharves, landfills, and other systems supported by soil or rock. Their goal: is to develop strategies to mitigate geotechnical hazards. It’s this work that’s foundational to the success of civil engineering projects, ensuring public safety and environmental sustainability by keeping everything sturdy.3

Take Alaska, for example — in its frozen lands, engineers face the unique challenge of working with permafrost. They use sensors (called thermistors) to track temperature changes in the soil, and advanced tech like satellite imagery and ground-penetrating radar helps them adjust designs accordingly, making sure everything stays solid, no matter how extreme the conditions!4

“Engineering consultants also need to be aware of considerations unique to particular locations, such as the fact that in North Carolina most roads are owned by the state or specific localities; there are no county-owned roads in the state,” notes Joe Stanton, the assistant director for recovery at North Carolina Emergency Management, part of the state’s Department of Public Safety.8

This local insight is essential for geotechnical engineers when planning projects, as it influences how responsibilities and permissions are managed.
Raising Awareness of the Profession

Despite its importance, geotechnical engineering remains one of the lesser-known branches of civil engineering. Yet, the demand for skilled geotechnical engineers is on the rise, especially as we face the challenges posed by the nation’s degrading infrastructure, climate change, and natural disasters.3

What does it take to become a geotechnical engineer? A solid foundation in math and physics, problem-solving abilities, and critical thinking skills are essential. Many professionals in this field hold degrees in civil or geological engineering and may pursue further specialization through certifications or graduate studies.3

The perks of a career in geotechnical engineering are impressive: job stability, competitive salaries, and the chance to make a significant impact on public safety and environmental protection. With an average salary of around $79,340 annually for civil engineers, those with specialized training in geotechnical engineering can earn significantly more — making it an appealing career choice for aspiring engineers.3

Why Aesthetics Matter and How You Can Go Beyond Code Requirements

Geotechnical engineers face real-world challenges that require creative solutions (that’s where the critical thinking skills come in handy!), especially when dealing with seismic activity and thawing permafrost. During the Denali Fault earthquake in 2002, the frozen ground thawed and became susceptible to liquefaction, reshaping engineers’ approach to seismic projects. Geotechnical teams now often improve soil stability through methods like compaction grouting to prepare for potential earthquakes.4

Annalise Mannix, the division chief for planning at Miami-Dade County water and sewer, stresses that her department’s goal is not just to meet building codes but to exceed them. “We know the sea wall ordinance says you have to build the wall to 5 ft,” Mannix explains, “But that doesn’t mean ‘only’ 5 ft.” This mindset highlights a growing push among engineers and municipalities to build beyond minimum requirements, considering rising sea levels, increasing flood risks, and other evolving factors.8

Consulting engineers are encouraged to advise their clients on the best solutions — even if these solutions extend beyond the minimum code requirements. For example, an experienced engineer “has a duty to note” the expected rise in sea levels and to consider wind and flood events based on the best available science. This approach ensures that public assets achieve or exceed their design lifespans, making for a better use of public funds.8

Steel is the backbone of our society. In fact, it’s the most commonly used material for building the world’s infrastructure.1 However, the gleaming nature of steel stands out in natural or scenic settings, especially on guardrails or transmission towers that wind through a variety of landscapes. That’s where natural finishes play a crucial role in helping blend construction projects like these into their environments.

An option is weathering steel (A588), which is a metal infused with alloys to form an oxidizing finish.2 But it’s not always the right choice for every project (more on that below).

Galvanized steel projects offer the combined benefits of steel’s strength and formability with the corrosion resistance of a zinc-iron coating.3 Natina complements this by providing a natural patina solution, allowing galvanized structures like transmission poles and lattice towers to maintain their durability while seamlessly blending into the environment. This partnership reduces visual impact and offers a low-maintenance, long-lasting finish.

Ultimately, when deciding between Natina-treated hot-dipped galvanized steel and weathering steel, it comes down to project-specific requirements. Here are some key considerations.

Weathering Steel vs. Hot-Dipped Galvanized Steel

Weathering steel’s susceptibility to corrosion increases in moist environments, particularly in coastal and tropical areas. To counteract the potential loss of mass and strength, builders opt for thicker steel sections from the onset of the project. However, the corrosive effects of weather, salty, air and humidity can accelerate the degradation and failure of weathering steel.4

Here’s why, according to the American Conservation Experience: “The protective rust needs constant wetting and drying cycles to maintain itself, but if the weathering steel is wetted but not dried, the protective layer erodes and corrosion proceeds. Failure usually results from extensive corrosion due to an extended time of wetness or poor design.”1

In contrast, hot-dipped galvanized steel is produced by immersing bare steel in molten zinc, creating a robust barrier against corrosion. This makes it stand out as a preferred choice in construction. Hot-dipped galvanized steel not only shares the strength attributes of weathering steel but also boasts several additional advantages (like being able to be treated with Natina’s patina solution).4

With built-in barrier and cathodic protection, this material demonstrates remarkable corrosion resistance, resulting in less long-term maintenance compared to weathering steel. Hot-dip galvanized steel also maintains its structural integrity even when exposed to harsh UV rays, snow, water, and soil. It’s worth noting that it’s also 100 percent recyclable, further emphasizing its environmental sustainability.4

So, why do people still use weathering steel?

Key Differences Between Weathering Steel and Natina-Treated Steel

Weathering steel, commonly known as Cor-ten and by the trademark COR-TEN, has been an option for years due to its uniform and rustic appearance.5

However, the initial perception of weathering steel as a low-maintenance material was not entirely accurate. It was marketed as a “set it and forget it” option, but real-world experience tells a different story.5

Routine maintenance is often required in areas where dense vegetation can grow around structures, trapping moisture and preventing the proper formation of the weathering patina.5

This raises a key point: While weathering steel can be an option for your project, it’s important to consider maintenance and the local environment when using it in outdoor construction.

Even utility companies that have successfully used weathering steel, such as American Electric Power (AEP), have encountered significant challenges. For example, AEP observed severe corrosion on a 20-year-old pole line, highlighting the susceptibility of weathering steel to environmental conditions.5

This underscores a crucial point: While weathering steel may be suitable for certain projects, its long-term performance depends heavily on maintenance and the specific environmental conditions in which it’s used. Understanding these factors is key to ensuring the durability and success of outdoor construction projects.

Aesthetic appeal of Natina vs Weathering steel

The choice between Natina-treated hot-dip galvanized steel and weathering steel is crucial to the long-term success of your project.

In a “wild” collaboration with a zoo, Natina took on an exciting project to revamp a bear habitat. The goal was to transform the glaring metal enclosure into a “bearly” noticeable one, while also ensuring the safety and well-being of the tropical bears that call it home.

Making a Hard Job Easy

The zoo faced the difficult challenge of finding a coloring solution that would improve the aesthetics of the habitat. The solution had to meet various requirements, including being USDA-compliant, natural, nontoxic, rust-free and low maintenance.

Essentially, the challenge was twofold — it had to avoid any adverse effects on the tropical bears and plants within the habitat, while simultaneously reducing the visual impact for human observers.

That’s where Natina came in. We collaborated with the zoologists, designers and experts to not only meet their criteria but also to surpass their expectations.

Natina: The Natural Choice

Natina emerged as the ideal choice for this project due to its eco-friendly nature. Instead of methods like weathering steel and paint — that each come with their own challenges such as rust and flaking — Natina provided a low-maintenance, natural solution that enhanced the aesthetics of the metal enclosure.

Bringing the Vision to Life

Our Natina team worked diligently at our facility, applying our beautiful signature rustic brown finish to everything from galvanized chain-link fences and metal wire to hardware and components.
Revealing the Results

With the successful application of Natina’s color solution, the metal enclosure surrounding the tropical bears has been transformed into a visually appealing sight that seamlessly blends in with the habitat.

Not only does our treatment have no negative impact on the well-being of the bears, but it also significantly reduces the visual impact of the necessary constructed areas around the animal habitat.
Natina is excited to announce its partnership with the Steel Utility Pole Coalition (SUPC)! This alliance will strengthen our industry presence and further expand our ability to work with amazing customers that want to make their steel structures more aesthetically pleasing.

About the SUPC

The SUPC brings together industry groups, manufacturers and end-users in a united effort to advocate for the use of steel poles.

With a focus on engineered strength and consistency, the SUPC champions the advantages that steel poles offer over traditional wood alternatives.

Advantages of Steel Utility Poles

When considering utility poles, steel stands out for an abundance of reasons.*

Durability: Steel’s inherent material properties ensure exceptional durability, offering long-lasting performance in various conditions.

Engineered Consistency: Steel’s uniformity in strength, derived from precise engineering, guarantees reliability across all applications.

Extended Service Life: Steel boasts a significantly longer lifespan compared to wood, often doubling it in many environments.

Low Maintenance: Steel poles require minimal maintenance, eliminating the days of battling rot, insect damage or woodpecker interference.

Fire Performance: Steel demonstrates superior resistance to wildfires, making it a preferred choice in fire-prone areas.

Consistent Strength Over Time: As steel poles age, they maintain their original strength properties, shielded by the galvanized coating.

Lower Life Cycle Costs: With reduced maintenance requirements — no aging-related shrinking or chemical treatments — steel offers cost savings over its lifespan.

Specialized Applications: Steel excels in unique scenarios, such as deterring woodpeckers, and its lighter weight makes it ideal for hard-to-reach install locations.

Customizable Strength: Unlike wood poles, where sizes are constrained by the existing forest resources that take decades to grow, steel offers unparalleled flexibility. Steel can be produced in any size or strength requirement, allowing for tailored solutions to meet specific project needs. This versatility eliminates the limitations imposed by natural growth cycles, providing a dynamic and efficient approach to meeting diverse construction demands.

Ah, the holidays! ‘Tis the season for joy, festivities, and … project management headaches for construction companies. Juggling work commitments with family gatherings and vacations can send productivity plummeting faster than Santa down a chimney. But with strategic planning and thoughtful management, you can keep your construction crew motivated during the holiday hustle.

7 Strategies to Keep Your Crew in Happy and in High Gear

1. Arrange a Holiday Work Team

Photo by Lena Sjö via Pexels

We all need a little time to decompress, so embrace the holiday spirit with a team-building twist! Instead of all hands on deck, strategize and designate specific teams for holiday duty. Not every worker needs to be at the construction site during this festive season.

Give everyone an early heads-up on scheduling, allowing time for planning and building camaraderie. For team building, boost morale and keep spirits high with workplace celebrations. Think luncheons, team dinners, and a dash of gratitude. Taking a breather from work shows your crew some love and fosters a sense of loyalty.

Some of our Natina crew!

2. Avoid Holiday Headaches by Simplifying Tasks

Don’t make construction tasks as complicated as figuring out how to bake a holiday fruitcake that won’t end up in the trash. Plan efficiently and tackle straightforward tasks until the new year. Better yet, incorporate a project management tool, such as Microsoft Planner or Basecamp, to streamline tasks. Keep distractions at bay, and remember that everyone should only have as much work as they can handle.

3. Manage Client Expectations

Let clients know what’s up during the holiday season. Know your capacity and maybe even over-deliver, ensuring them the project will sleigh — ahem, stay — on schedule. A bit of transparency goes a long way.

4. Be Reasonable with Construction Crew Management

Best practices for the holidays: Recognize the challenges, ditch the excessive demands, offer some flexible hours, recognize efforts, and prioritize your crew’s well-being. A happy worker is a productive worker!

And you know the people who want to do “just one more thing” before they go home at night? Be the voice of reason for them. Remind them to go home, spend some time with their loved ones and get some rest.

Photo by Yury Kim via Pexels

5. Offer Flexible Time

If possible, implement flexible hours to give your crew a breather during the holiday madness. Encourage smart planning with project management tools, ensuring tasks get done while leaving room for some festive fun.

6. Minimize Demands, Maximize Perks

Overtime? Keep it chill. Minimize extra hours. If overtime’s a must, sweeten the deal with extra perks or higher pay. Happy workers mean happy projects.

Photo by Tim Mossholder on Unsplash

7. Have a Charitable Mission

Encourage your team to focus on the true spirit of giving by incorporating a charitable mission into your holiday activities. Consider supporting initiatives such as the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program, organizing a food drive, or adopting a family in need.

By giving back to the community, your team can make a meaningful impact. Not only does this align with the season of giving, but it also fosters a sense of unity and goodwill among your construction crew, making the holidays even more special.

Unwrap Success During the Holidays

Managing construction during the holidays might sound like navigating a construction crane through a snowstorm, but these seven strategies can make it smooth sailing. Strike the perfect balance between productivity and holiday cheer with thoughtful planning, open communication, and a supportive approach.

We’re happy to help with your project any time of year, whether it’s during the holidays or after. So, when you’re ready to start planning your next construction project, contact us!

From monumental bridges that span seemingly endless bodies of water to “spider webs” of city transportation networks, the interconnectedness of design and engineering results in structures that are testaments of human ingenuity.

But more importantly, these projects enhance our daily lives. When city planners, architects and engineers come together, they expertly contribute to the development of our modern world.1

Meticulous planning lays the foundation for work by a civil engineer.2 When collaboration between planners and civil engineers is seamless at the beginning of a project, it can ensure that innovative solutions are used to address even the most intricate engineering challenges.

The collaboration between architects and civil engineers is another crucial symbiotic relationship. While architects bring forth visionary designs that captivate the eye, civil engineers turn those visions into tangible, safe and functional structures.3

Through collaboration and group innovation, projects can be elevated to greater heights, which has been true throughout history. Designers and engineers have worked hand in hand to create some of the world’s most iconic structures. Think of the Eiffel Tower, a marvel of engineering that seamlessly merges intricate design elements with structural integrity.4

Problem-Solving at Its Core

Engineers are inherently problem solvers, wielding their expertise to address a diverse array of challenges. Each branch of engineering focuses on specific problem domains, each contributing to society in unique ways:

Civil Engineers tackle infrastructure and large structures, including bridges, buildings and highways.1

Electrical Engineers manage power generation and distribution, overseeing electrical equipment, communications systems and power stations.1

Mechanical Engineers specialize in systems in motion, working on engines, turbines and robotics.1

Biomedical Engineers address clinical and healthcare issues, creating medical devices, surgical implants and prosthetics.1

Aerospace Engineers focus on aircraft and spacecraft, developing aviation and defense systems, as well as rocket and fuel systems.1

Chemical Engineers work with chemicals and materials, contributing to the creation of plastics, medicines and petrochemicals.1

Environmental Engineers address pollution and ecological concerns through systems that promote sustainability, waste disposal and pollution control.1

Software Engineers specialize in computer information systems, affecting various sectors, including aviation, finance and healthcare.5

Designing Our World

Civil engineering, in particular, is one of the most impactful branches of engineering, touching almost every aspect of our daily lives. From the roads we commute on to the water supply systems we drink from, civil engineering shapes our societies.

Urban Planning: A Bridge between Form and Function

Urban planning, often called city planning, shapes the development of cities and towns through strategies that enhance the growth and well-being of urban landscapes.

Key players in this industry are planners and architects. Urban planners guide the destiny of spaces, deciding how they’ll be used and considering the impact of development. Architects inject buildings and landscapes with character by focusing on the design aesthetics, and ensuring functionality, safety, and code compliance.1

The Dawn of Urban Aesthetics

Historically, urban planning emerged as a response to the crowded and unhygienic conditions of the late 19th century. Diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and influenza ravaged overcrowded cities, prompting planners to advocate for separating industries from residential areas through zoning ordinances.2

Not-so-fun fact: When the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the world in 2020, rats spread from living in and near restaurants to invading nearby homes for food.3

Drawing from the European Vision

Photo by Lucas Gallone on Unsplash

The pursuit of urban beauty dates back to when cities were centers of imperial grandeur and architectural marvels. In Europe, the grand plazas, majestic cathedrals, and palaces symbolized the importance of appearance in shaping perceptions and asserting authority.4
</sup>

This concept transitioned to public spaces and parks as the early-20th century Progressive Era introduced the idea of recreation and relaxation as essential elements of urban planning.4

The seeds of urban beauty took root in the United States through the City Beautiful movement, which found its pinnacle in the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago.4

Championed by American architect Daniel Burnham, this movement established a template characterized by grand malls, majestic civic buildings, and Greco-Roman architecture. This template, intended to contrast with the disarray of the surroundings, inspired the transformation of civic centers and boulevards across the country.4

Photo by Guneet Jassal on Unsplash

Fun fact: Orlando’s nickname is “The City Beautiful.” It was named after the City Beautiful Movement because Orlando was heavily influenced by urban planning focused on including parks, tree-lined streets, and favorable conditions for pedestrians.5

Parks: A Worldwide Phenomenon

One iconic example of the growing importance of parks is New York’s Central Park.

Central Park showcased the separation of pedestrian and vehicular traffic, embraced natural landscapes, and highlighted the potential of parks to enhance property values in their vicinity. The park’s impact reverberated worldwide, influencing the way cities approached the interplay of aesthetics and function.4

The Urban Architectural Renaissance

In the present day, the fusion of form and function drives urban beautification strategies. Cities are reimagining spaces as holistic environments that cater to both aesthetics and practicality.

Parks are not only places of leisure but also urban oases designed for relaxation and social interaction. Mixed-use communities combine residential and commercial elements, minimizing reliance on automobiles and promoting walkability.2

The Emergence of Mixed-Use Communities

Have you ever seen advertisements for communities where you can “Work, Live, Play”? That’s a result of the focus on mixed-use communities, which integrate housing, shops, and public transport within neighborhoods.

Projects, such as Civano in Tucson, Arizona, and Loreto Bay in Baja California Sur, Mexico, exemplify the potential of blending urban functions for enhanced quality of life.2

This approach reduces the reliance on cars and fosters a more walkable lifestyle.

Pioneering Sustainable Transportation

Cities worldwide are reducing car dependency and encouraging more sustainable modes of transportation.

From Vienna and Munich to Copenhagen, streets are being reclaimed from car traffic. Barcelona, Paris, and Chicago are dedicating more roadways to bicycles, while London and Stockholm are even implementing fees for city driving, fueling the shift toward walking,
cycling, and public transit use.2

Photo by Markus Winkler on Unsplash

Redefining Urban Agriculture

Another trend in city planning is the rise of urban agriculture and community gardens. For example, in Flint, Michigan, and Chicago, vacant land is being repurposed to grow local produce.2

In Philadelphia’s Haddington neighborhood, the Urban Tree Connection has transformed derelict land into the Neighborhood Food Central Production Farm, cultivating various crops.2

As urban space becomes scarcer, innovative solutions like vertical farming have also emerged. This practice involves cultivating food within high-rise buildings. Vertical farming not only maximizes land use but also offers sustainable alternatives to traditional agriculture.2

These initiatives not only contribute to local food security but also promote a connection between residents and their environment.

Rewilding: A Biodiversity Revolution

Today’s urban landscape is also shifting to address the global biodiversity crisis. Animal populations have declined by nearly 70 percent on average in the last 50 years, so cities are stepping into the forefront of the rewilding movement, embracing ecological sustainability into urban architecture and planning.6

This ecological strategy, championed by researchers since the late 1990s, is finding its place in the urban landscape. Rewilding introduces a paradigm shift in urban architecture and planning, where accommodating urban biodiversity becomes a cornerstone of design.6

Bioarchitecture, for instance, integrates wildlife-friendly features into urban designs, catering to creatures such as bats, opossums, and birds. Meanwhile, biophilic planning emerges as a movement that not only supports biodiversity but also enhances ecological connectivity for both humans and animals. This twofold approach doesn’t just increase biodiversity; it also addresses issues such as urban heat and climate resilience.6

One of the critical aspects of rewilding is the revival of large mammal populations. Yet, this undertaking faces complex challenges, as the decline of these creatures is often met with misconceptions of danger and destruction. Urban areas are now embracing a responsibility to infuse wildlife-friendly planning, while suburban zones recognize their role in fostering coexistence with larger mammals.6

The synergy between planners, architects, biologists, and wildlife experts is paramount in this new era of rewilding.
