Blending highway safety in California

On a heavily traveled stretch highway in San Diego, Caltrans crews were tasked with exchangined existing concrete K-Rail or Jersey barrier, because of the soft foundation the highway was on. As a traveled areas, this project focused on targeted improvements rather than full reconstruction, making it both efficient and highly complex to execute under live traffic conditions.

Zoneguard barriers built for work zones

Zoneguard® was selected as the primary barrier system for this project due to its performance, flexibility and efficiency in active highway construction. Unlike traditional concrete barriers, Zoneguard is a mobile steel system that allows crews to install, adjust and relocate barriers as construction phases evolve. From a safety standpoint, it is designed to stabilize on impact by engaging its base, helping absorb energy and limit movement. Typically these are used as temporary barriers but were ideal for the soft foundation the land was on.

Blending in with Natina

While safety and performance were the priority, the visual impact of the project couldn’t be ignored.

Miles of exposed galvanized steel barriers can create glare and a harsh industrial presence. To address this challenge, Natina was applied to the Zoneguard systems to transform the bright galvanized finish into a more natural, weathered tone. From an engineering perspective, the barrier performs exactly as designed. From a real-world perspective, it fits more naturally into its surroundings.

Whether it’s highway barriers, guardrails, end terminals or engineered systems, Natina helps steel blend and complement naturally into the environment. Explore how Natina can support your next highway, transportation or construction project.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Zoneguard barriers used for?

Zoneguard barriers are steel barrier systems used in highways to safely separate traffic from traffic or construction activity while maintaining flexibility for changing project conditions.

Why use steel barriers instead of concrete in work zones?

Steel barrier systems like Zoneguard are lighter, easier to install and adjust, and provide strong impact performance, making them ideal for phased construction and active traffic environments.

What is Natina and why is it used on steel barriers?

Natina is a color treatment applied to steel that creates a natural, mottled finish. It reduces glare, softens the appearance of galvanized steel and helps constructed materials better blend into its environment.

Can Natina be used on other infrastructure materials?

Yes, Natina can be applied to a wide range of steel materials, including guardrail, end terminals, fencing, structural steel and other roadway elements.
